Observer Notes:

Persian Astronomer Al Sufi, observing from 32 degrees north, was the first to catalogue IC 2391. He referred to it as a “nebulous star” in reference to omicron Velorum. Al Sufi’s Book of the Fixed Stars was compiled for epoch 964 A.D.

Including IC 2391, Al Sufi recorded a total 8 nebulous objects in the Book of Fixed Stars. Four were asterisms, three of which had been previously recorded by Ptolemy and Hipparchus. Two of the remaining three nebulae had been catalogued previously by Ptolemy.

The remaining nebula first observed by Al Sufi and recorded in the Book of Fixed Stars is the Andromeda Galaxy, M31.

M31 & IC 2391 were to be the last deep sky object catalogued before the invention of the telescope in 1609 A.D.

Of the 6 deep sky objects catalogued by Hipparchus, Ptolemy and Al Sufi, IC 2391 is the only object unavailable to northern observers.

Observer Notes:

Ptolemy, observing from 31 degrees north at Alexandria, first catalogued the Open Cluster in Coma Berenices in his Great Syntaxas. Ptolemy’s catalog was compiled over a period of 24 years, from 127 A.D. to 151 A.D.

Ptolemy recorded 6 nebulous objects in the Great Syntaxas. Three turned out to be asterisms. Two of the remaining three, M44 and the Double Cluster in Perseus, had been catalogued previously by Hipparchus.

Ptolemy’s cluster, M7, is the remaining nebulous object first recorded in the Great Syntaxas.

But there’s something special about them. Other meteor showers happen when Earth passes through the debris trail of a comet. Tiny bits of dust no bigger than a grain of sand disintegrate high in our atmosphere and leave behind dazzling streaks of light. But the parent of the Geminids isn’t a comet at all. It appears to be a curious near-Earth asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon.

Observer Notes:

Ptolemy, observing from 31 degrees north at Alexandria, first catalogued M7 in his Great Syntaxas.

The Coma Berenices open cluster is the remaining nebulous object first recorded in the Great Syntaxas.

If you have dark enough skies to see all of the stars in Monoceros you won’t have any difficulty locating M50.

Jones: “Although the area, like much of the Milky Way, is rich in groups of faint stars, M50 stands out well as a separate cluster by virtue of having a ring of slightly darker sky surrounding it.”

M1 can be difficult in any but the best conditions. If conditions are good enough to allow location of both reference lines, M1 will be easy.

Distinctive serrated outline and filaments will only be visible with large telescopes, but irregular outline is observable with many medium-sized scopes under good viewing conditions.

Messier: “Nebulosity along the southern horn of Taurus. It contains no star; it is a whitish light, elongated like the flame of a taper, discovered while observing the comet of 1758.”

This remarkable pair of galaxies is fairly easy to locate because the bright reference stars are located at a comfortable distance from each other.
